Dick Cheney's Legislative Accomplishments ... Both of Them

Congressman John Spratt (D-SC), ranking member on the House Budget Committee, made the following remarks on a call today: "Dick Cheney served in the Congress for 11 years. I served with him for most of these years. In that time, he only passed two bills. One was to build a flood plain on the Colorado River and the other was a bill to help a constituent. What's even more telling about Dick Cheney's record in the House is not what he supported but what he opposed - things like Headstart and funding for seniors. It seems pretty dishonest for Bush and Cheney to be attacking John Kerry - who passed 57 bills in the Senate - for his legislative accomplishments." Here, for comparison is a summary of the legislation sponsored and passed by Vice President Cheney during his 11 year legislative career. Cheney's Legislative Career by the Numbers 96th Congress: 4 Sponsored; 0 became Law 97th Congress: 4 Sponsored: 0 became Law 98th Congress: 8 Sponsored: 0 became Law 99th Congress: 7 Sponsored: 1 became Law (H.R.1246: A bill to establish a federally declared floodway for the Colorado River below Davis Dam.) 100th Congress: 7 Sponsored: 1 became Law (H.R.712: A bill for the relief of Lawrence K. Authur Andersen and Halliburton I get good advice from their people based on how we’re doing business and how we’re operating over and above just sort of the normal by-the-books auditing arrangement. -Dick Cheney, then chairman of Halliburton, praising Arthur Andersen in a 1996 Andersen marketing video. Baghdad "Once you get to Baghdad, it's not clear what you do with it. It's not clear what kind of government you put in place of the one that's currently there now. Is it going to be a Shia regime, a Sunni regime, a Kurdish regime? Or one that tilts toward the Baathists, or one that tilts toward Islamic fundamentalists? How much credibility is that going to have if it's set up by the American military there? How long does the United States military have to stay there to protect the people that sign on for that government, and what happens once we leave?" Weapons Of Mass Destruction "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction....What he wants is time, and more time to husband his resources to invest in his ongoing chemical and biological weapons program, and to gain possession of nuclear weapons." -- Dick Cheney, August 26, 2002 "We believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons. I think Mr. El Baradei frankly is wrong" --Dick Cheney, on NBC's `Meet The Press', March 16, 2003 Family Values Cheney, as the Vice President, is also the president of the Senate and so he was present for a routine photo shoot. (The Senate was not in session during the shoot.) It was there that Cheney bumped into Senator Patrick J. Leahy (D-VT), a ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. The two began to argue with Cheney criticizing Leahy for his remarks about Halliburton's war profiteering and that company's ties to Cheney (Cheney was formerly the CEO of Haliburton). Leahy fired back something about Republicans accusing Democrats of being anti-Catholic for opposing some of Bush's judicial nominees. In other words, it was a bit of a cat fight between opposing politicians. The argument erupted with Cheney, the traditional family values virtuous Vice President telling Leahy, "go fuck yourself!" Leahy spokesman David Carle said of the outburst, "The vice president seemed to be taking personally the criticism that Senator Leahy and others have leveled against Halliburton's sole-source contracts in Iraq."
